Pride & 2SLGBTQIA+ Elders

Pride would not exist without queer and trans elders. Every right we have, every space we gather in, every word we now speak aloud without shame was carved out by those who came before us, often at great cost. Many faced arrest, exile, institutionalization, or silence. Many did not live to see the freedoms they fought for. And still, they showed us how to live with courage, with defiance, and with love.

Queer and trans elders are not just survivors. They are cultural keepers, spiritual guides, and movement builders. And yet too often, our communities reflect the same ageism we critique in the wider culture, failing to honour our elders, sidelining their wisdom, or treating them as relics instead of revolutionaries. In a world that already tries to forget them, we cannot afford to do the same. Honouring queer and trans elders is not nostalgia. It is resistance rooted in gratitude.

Today, we give thanks for those who came out when it wasn’t safe, who lived and loved through crisis, who built community when the world refused to make room. Whether they are still with us or have become ancestors, we carry their legacy forward. Pride is not just about who we are now. It is about who made it possible for us to be here at all.
