Intersex Awareness Day 2025

Today, on Intersex Awareness Day, we join intersex people and allies around the world in celebrating the beauty, resilience, and truth of bodies that do not fit within rigid binaries. Intersex people are born with sex characteristics that do not align with typical definitions of male or female. That simple fact has been used for generations to justify invasive medical procedures, erasure, and exclusion. Yet intersex people continue to resist those pressures by living and loving as their full selves. Their courage invites all of us to imagine a world where every body is seen as sacred, whole, and worthy of care.

At The Rainbow Well, we believe that affirmation must begin with listening. Too often, conversations about gender and sexuality overlook intersex experiences or reduce them to medical case studies. But intersex realities are not anomalies to be explained away. They are testimonies to the richness of creation and the vastness of human diversity. True solidarity means amplifying intersex voices, supporting intersex-led advocacy, and challenging the social and theological assumptions that sustain binary thinking.

Faith communities have a particular role to play in this work. Theologies that have been used to justify exclusion can also be transformed into sources of healing when we return to their core truth: that every person is made in the image of God. Intersex awareness is not only about visibility but about justice, bodily autonomy, and the right to live free from shame.

As we reflect today, may we commit ourselves to building communities where intersex people are not merely included but centred, celebrated, and loved as they are.
