Mamma Black & South African Safe Spaces
Here at The Rainbow Well, we are committed to intersectionality and solidarity with the wider 2SLGBTQIA+ community. To amplify our collective impact, we donate 10% of all contributions to a selected queer BIPOC organization each quarter. This quarter, we are proud to support the Masiphumelele Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ Youth in Cape Town, South Africa, founded by the inspiring Mamma Black.
Masiphumelele, or “Masi,” is a black township predominantly inhabited by the Xhosa tribe and refugees from other African nations. Despite the end of apartheid nearly three decades ago, Masi remains deeply affected by economic disparity, with most residents living in shacks, facing unemployment rates near 80%, and struggling with daily food insecurity. Amidst these challenges, the community also grapples with high crime rates and an AIDS prevalence exceeding 20%.
In 2023, Mamma Black, a dedicated community organizer and mother, created the first and only safe space for queer youth in Masi. Her journey began when her own child came out as non-binary and gay. Rejecting the harmful notion that 2SLGBTQIA+ identities are “un-African,” Mamma Black embraced her child’s identity, learned to use their pronouns, and took action to support other queer youth in her community.
The safe space, located in an unfinished two-story section of the community center, has been brought to life through Mamma Black’s efforts. She has personally tiled, painted, and furnished it with donated items, creating a welcoming environment for the youth. However, to fully realize her vision, additional support is needed to furnish the space, build the kitchen, and secure a sustainable operating budget.
Mamma Black’s safe space offers workshops, events, and support for queer youth and their parents. Over 40 youth have visited, with more than a dozen attending regularly. Her vision extends beyond these initial efforts. She dreams of transforming the space into a vibrant community hub where queer youth can gather after school for a hot meal, complete their homework in a supportive environment, and engage in charity events to help their community. By building a small kitchen and hosting meals for the food-insecure, Mamma Black aims to showcase the contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, challenging stigmas and fostering acceptance.
By supporting the Masiphumelele Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ Youth, we can help Mamma Black continue her vital work. Your donations will directly contribute to creating a safer, more inclusive community where queer youth are valued and empowered. Together, we can amplify the voices of queer BIPOC individuals and make a meaningful impact on their lives.
